In each county in Florida, a local Education Foundation is the recipient of donations generated from the sale of the Florida Education License Plate. These 501 (c) (3) organizations were established to help public schools achieve excellence in education by supporting students, teachers and schools. All dollars raised by your local Education Foundations support programs that are not typically funded through tax dollars.
Education Foundations are governed by a Board of Directors comprised of prominent business and community leaders who set high expectations and accountability measures for the programs they support. They pride themselves on supporting innovative programming that involves research-based solutions for issues facing student achievement in our schools.
Some examples of projects that may be funded through donations provided through the Florida Education License Plate include:
- Classroom grants. Teachers apply on a competitive basis for grants that fund innovation in the classroom. Projects range from peer to peer tutoring programs for students, equipment and supplies for the advance study to the physics of putting satellites into orbit and music programs for special needs children.
- Literacy Projects. Struggling readers in grades K-3 are given extra assistance through targeted reading programs.
- Technical and Career Education. Middle school students are introduced to various professions that are available through technical certifications. With fewer than 80% of our high school graduates completing a college or university education, this program provides an introduction to alternative, career-focused areas of education that can lead to high-paying, high-demand jobs.
