Students throughout Florida will have these hand-on STEM education experiences and more this school year thanks to a grant to the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF) from the  Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc.

A total of 37 STEM solutions-based learning projects were judged by industry professionals with the seven top-scoring proposals each receiving $5,000 from the CFEF grant.  Together, they will directly impact 2,330 students, and 35 teachers, involving nine local workplace partners.  Check out the summaries of this year’s winners here!

The Motorola Innovation Generation program awards organizations such as the CFEF that foster and support STEM initiatives for teachers and U.S. preschool through university students – especially girls and underrepresented minorities.

“A critical component of engaging today’s students and teachers with STEM careers is providing hands-on learning opportunities.  Funding from the Motorola Solutions Foundation offers students the chance to truly understand how classroom curriculum translates into real world employment,” stated Mary Chance, CFEF President.

The Motorola Solutions Foundation has partnered with the CFEF since 2011 to support student achievement in STEM areas through a competitive grant process for quality teacher projects that utilized the unique opportunities and resources of their geographic region.  With a total of $300,000, this program has encouraged more than 16,000 students to pursue further study and, in some cases, careers in the STEM field by exposing them to potential job opportunities.

Nationwide, the grant program overall will impact about 1 million students and teachers, each receiving an average of 120 programming

hours from partner non-profit organizations and institutions. Programs will support special populations including girls and women, underrepresented minorities, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, people with disabilities and the military.

“The Motorola Solutions Foundation created the Innovation Generation Grant program nine years ago to support educational experiences that spark students to turn their dreams into innovations that will shape our society’s future,” said Matt Blakely, executive director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. “Organizations like the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations are teaching tomorrow’s leaders that careers in engineering and technology are both fun and within their reach.”
