We are the ultimate champion for Florida’s community of local education foundations aligned with nearly every county-wide school district. These vital nonprofits are a proven mechanism for connecting community to classrooms to innovate learning, power potential, and celebrate success.
We believe that strong local education foundations are essential for communities to close opportunity gaps and ensure educational success for all students.
Our mission is to work with our members and partners to connect individuals, organizations and financial resources, building the capacity and effectiveness of local education foundations.
History & Quick Facts
The Consortium began in 1992 as a volunteer-led effort to provide peer-to-peer support for Florida’s emerging local education foundations.
Most Consortium members were started after 1984 legislation allowing one direct support organization (DSO) in each of Florida’s 67 county-wide school districts. Today about half the nonprofits operate more autonomously, but all are the single recognized nonprofit aligned with their school district.
The Consortium represents one recognized education foundation in each county-wide school district. Member local education foundations collectively represent 99% of Florida’s 2.8 million K-12 students.
Together, Consortium members raise more than $80 million annually for a variety of locally driven initiatives and hold more than $172 million in assets. They are led by 1,200 board members, 80% of whom are local business and community leaders working in partnership with school district leaders.
The Consortium is governed by the executive directors of member education foundations and guided by a Strategic Advisory Council comprised of national and state business, education, government and philanthropic leaders.
The Consortium manages the nation’s only 1:1 legislative match for education foundation initiatives and a variety of privately funded grant programs. Of the Consortium’s nearly $6 million annual budget,96% benefits local education foundations through grants and services.
