lighting the way to a bright future
Florida’s popular Bright Futures Scholarship Program has been primarily funded by the Florida Lottery since creation of the program by the Florida Legislature in 1997. More than $6.2 billion has been used to fund the Bright Futures Scholarship Program, which has sent more than 840,000 students to college.
While all Florida students can earn Bright Futures scholarships, the Florida Lottery recognizes that many need support to meet the criteria and prepare for post-secondary success – particularly students of low socio-economic backgrounds and aspiring first-generation college students.
Through a partnership with the Consortium, the Florida Lottery helps “light the way” to earning a Bright Futures scholarship and attending college for tens of thousands of students in each of their nine districts throughout Florida. Local investments support college-readiness workshops, college visits, test preparation and financial aid assistance.
With all the challenges students face, including interruptions due to hurricanes and pandemics, initiatives like this help keep students focused on their big picture goals. Education foundations can be nimble in converting their support and college coaching efforts to virtual sessions, online resources and personal one-on-one outreach, as necessary to keep students on track.
