The Consortium’s annual Leadership Retreat brought together leaders from 34 local education foundations across Florida for two days of meaningful connection, reflection, and professional growth in Ocala, Florida. Designed to recharge and re-engage foundation leaders, the retreat offered a mix of inspiration, practical learning, and space to share ideas with peers.
The retreat began with a powerful session led by Stirrups ‘n Strides, introducing participants to the healing relationship between horses and humans. The experience served as a heartfelt reminder of the importance of prioritizing both mental and physical well-being in the high-impact work of supporting students, educators, and communities.
Throughout the retreat, participants explored burnout recognition and prevention, participated in a leadership legacy exercise, and took a deeper dive into organizational life cycles, quality standards, and performance. These sessions helped foundation leaders reflect on where their organizations are and where they want to go next.
New CEO Amity Schuyler joined attendees for breakfast Friday morning and participated in conversations during the final day of the retreat, providing an early opportunity to build relationships and listen to the needs of the network.
One of the most meaningful moments of the retreat was the presentation of the inaugural Susan Copeland “Unbridled Spirit Award” to Public Education Foundation of Marion County’s Executive Director Meghan Magamoll, honoring her leadership, optimism, and deep commitment to public education. Created in memory of longtime Polk Education Foundation executive director Susan Copeland, the award honors a leader who demonstrates perseverance, optimism, and a joyful spirit through challenges—hallmarks of Susan’s legacy. In addition to her leadership locally, Susan was an active voice within the Consortium, serving as Membership Chair and leading the scholarship affinity group. The award’s name reflects her deep love of horses and her unshakable dedication to students, even in the face of personal and professional adversity.
The retreat concluded with a heartfelt reflection from retiring President and CEO, Mary Chance. As her final retreat with the Consortium, Mary shared leadership lessons, stories from the field, and her hopes for the future of Florida’s education foundation network—a fitting close to her remarkable 17-year tenure.
