Energizing Educators: Florida Power & Light Company EmPOWERing STEM Educators Program Lights the Way
Since 2018, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has energized STEM education across the Sunshine State through its dynamic partnership with the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF). With investments exceeding $778,000, including nearly $600,000 through the FPL EmPOWERing STEM Educators program, this collaboration has transformed classrooms in 15 districts. Through 38 innovative projects, the partnership has equipped and inspired over 16,000 teachers, creating a powerful ripple effect that continues to spark curiosity and fuel the next generation of STEM innovators.
The FPL EmPOWERing STEM Educators program strengthens STEM education across Florida through peer-to-peer professional development and classroom innovation. The program aims to increase teacher knowledge of effective math and science instructional practices while promoting alignment with Florida Standards through collaborative learning.

Key Program Elements
- Peer-to-peer teacher professional development focused on STEM instruction
- Classroom observations and collaborative lesson planning
- Standards-aligned curriculum development
- Support for both new and experienced educators
- Focus on practical implementation of innovative teaching strategies
“As a new teacher with some experience, I was able to be introduced to both new teaching methods and new classroom management methods. These are methods that I have not seen inside a classroom. Since having my own class, I do not have as much time to spectate other teachers or classes, so this gave me the opportunity to do so.” – Champions for Learning
Successes
- Doubled student pass rates on end-of-course exams in some districts
- Increased student engagement through hands-on STEM activities
- Enhanced teacher confidence in STEM instruction
- Created sustainable professional learning communities
- Provided crucial support for new STEM teachers
Local education foundations participating in the program receive comprehensive support to ensure successful implementation. This includes grants ranging from $5,000-$10,000 for program activities, funding for substitute teachers to enable peer observations, and resources for classroom materials and supplies. Foundations also receive assistance with professional development coordination and access to program evaluation and reporting tools. This multi-faceted support structure ensures that foundations can effectively deliver the program while measuring and documenting its impact.
